What is a crown?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped “caps” that are designed to fit onto a damaged tooth. Once in place, a crown completely restores the natural shape, function, and appearance of your tooth. What is an onlay?

An onlay is similar to a filling. However, instead of filling your tooth directly with resin, Dr. Song will scan your tooth, and then use our fastmill.io technology to create a porcelain onlay that fits into your tooth perfectly.

Then, he will bond the onlay into place to restore the shape, appearance, and strength of your tooth. Onlays are often used when a tooth is too damaged for a filling, but is still strong enough that it doesn’t need a crown.

What does fastmill.io technology mean for you?

Glidewell fastmill.io uses CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Manufacturing) technology to create dental restorations on the spot. During your appointment, Dr. Song can quickly create a strong, natural-looking porcelain crown using a 3D scanner, a specialized computer program, and a milling machine.

How do we create and place your crown on the same day?

1. Digital scans

There’s no need for putty-based dental impressions. Instead, Dr. Song will scan the treatment area with a powerful 3D intraoral scanner.

2. Professional preparation

Once he’s scanned your mouth, Dr. Song will prepare the treatment area, removing any unhealthy tooth material to ensure your crown attaches to a strong, stable platform.

3. Designing your crown

Using your 3D scans and a powerful software suite, Dr. Song will create a 3D model of your new crown. This is the “blueprint” that will be turned into a real crown by our fastmill.io technology.

4. Precision machining

Once Dr. Song has finalized the shape and design of your crown, he’ll load the 3D model and a porcelain block into our fastmill.io milling machine. In just a few minutes, this machine will carve the block into your new crown.

5. Finishing up

Finally, Dr. Song will remove your crown from the machine and check it to make sure it fits perfectly. If necessary, he’ll make some final adjustments. Then, Dr. Song will bond it into place and send you home to enjoy your newly restored smile.
