What are Implant Dentures?

An implant denture is a partial or full set of prosthetic teeth that has been attached to a number of dental implant posts that have been strategically positioned in the upper or lower jaw. Dental implants act like tooth roots, which make your dentures feel and function as if they were your natural teeth. We’ll recommend one of the following two types of implant dentures based on your oral health and your personal preferences.    

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Patients who don’t want to take their dentures out for cleaning will most likely want fixed dentures. Your new    teeth will stay permanently attached to 4 to 6 implant posts; they will only be removed by your implant dentist in    Willowbrook as needed. This type of implant denture requires more jawbone density.

Removable Implant Dentures

Removable dentures can be taken out at any time so that you can clean underneath them. They generally require fewer    implant posts than fixed dentures, usually in the range of 2 to 5. This type of implant denture is often the more    viable option for those who have less jawbone density.

The Implant Denture Procedure

The process begins by preparing your mouth for dental implants. Damaged or decayed teeth are removed, bone grafts are    used to replenish lost tissue in the jaw, and any oral health issues like gum disease are properly treated. Implant    surgery can be performed once the mouth is ready. After receiving your dental implants, you’ll wait a few    months for osseointegration to take place. You’ll then return to our office so that we can attach abutments    and design the final denture. Once your new permanent teeth are ready, we’ll schedule one last appointment to    affix them to your implants.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

You might be a candidate for implant dentures if:

   
• You are missing several or all of your teeth, or if you currently already wear dentures.
   
• You are in relatively good health overall.
   
• Your mouth is free of gum disease and other oral health problems.
   
• You have a sufficient amount of jawbone, or are willing to undergo bone grafting as needed.
   
• You are willing to commit to the lengthy dental implant process.

Getting implant dentures is a lengthier process than getting traditional dentures, but the sheer number of benefits    makes the procedure well worth it. The implants supporting your denture will help preserve your jawbone, preventing    facial collapse over time and helping you maintain a stronger, healthier bite. Also, your implants will keep your    new teeth in place, boosting your confidence and improving your ability to eat anything you want. And while    traditional prosthetics have relatively limited lifespans, implant dentures can last 30 years or a lifetime if they    receive regular care and maintenance.
