Treating gum disease means getting rid of the plaque and tartar that has accumulated in the gum pockets that have appeared in your mouth. To do this, scaling is performed with a special instrument that scrapes away the harmful substances clinging to the roots of the teeth and the gums. We’ll then move on to root planing and smooth out any rough surfaces we find on the surface of the teeth. The gums will have an easier time reattaching themselves to smooth roots.
Dental lasers allow us to remove infected gum tissue and kill oral bacteria in a painless, efficient manner. Our dental office uses a Gemini™ Diode Laser – the first dual-length soft tissue diode laser made available in the United States. It is incredibly easy to control and allows for smoother cutting of the tissue in much less time. And since it seals any exposed blood vessels automatically, you will experience much less bleeding during the recovery process.
Scaling and root planing will remove much of the bacteria contributing to gum disease, but some harmful organisms could still be hiding at the very bottom of your periodontal pockets. Arestin is a special antibiotic powder that is placed in your gum pockets to continue fighting the infection for at least two weeks. Studies have shown that using Arestin in conjunction with scaling and root planing is extremely effective for reducing periodontal pocket sizes.
